Unlike last fall when the Eagles celebrated a season opening win for new coach Brad Mendes, this year's opening performance was an expectation.
The 40 point eruption was the most points Alvarez has scored in 12 games. The shutout was its first in 18 games.
Yet, it was the amount of big plays that got your attention.
Such as Michael Ramirez taking an interception back 85 yards for a touchdown. Or quarterback Matt Martinez breaking free for a 60-yard touchdown run.
Martinez, a three-time state meet qualifier in wrestling, is giving the Eagles a presence threw the air, tossing two touchdown passes to De'amonte Huntley.
If Alvarez can continue to be effective throwing the ball, it will make Ramirez -- who also rushed for a touchdown -- that much more dangerous as a tailback.
Keep in mind that Alvarez started last season 2-0 before finishing 1-7. So there is a reason emotions were tam after a season opening win.
Nevertheless, the mindset of a humble squad is what pleased Mendes.
