Nor did it help when the Spartans opened league play with a three-point loss to tonight's opponent in Alvarez.
Yet, upon further review, the Spartans record was somewhat misleading, having been involved in six games decided by five points or less, coming up short in four of them.
So what has changed during a five game winning streak that has catapulted Seaside to a share of the league lead as the second half begins tonight?
Well, the Spartans are finding ways to win those tight games. Of their run of five straight wins, three have gone down to the final minute.
And Seaside is realizing that it can't rely solely on sophomore Jordan Olivares, who is finding a lot of box-and-one's on defense.
Arguably the best player in the Pacific Division, Olivares is finding other avenues to contribute, as evident by her stat sheet of 15 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals against Watsonville.
But then you have freshmen Jocelyn Hernandez providing eight points, or Alonis Ingram coming up with clutch baskets. Nine different players scored in Tuesday's win.
That's a recipe for success.
