Monterey boys soccer

If the name sounds familiar, it's because Louis Sanchez has been among the Toreadores team leaders in goals for four years.
Teammates Jimmy Diego and Fernando Cardenas have also been along for the ride for two playoff runs since their freshmen seasons.
Yet, while the program has lost just one league game twice since their arrivals, a league title has eluded Monterey. In fact, the program has never won a league championship.
Monterey went 9-1-2 when the trio were freshmen and 7-1-4 last year, each time losing out on the title by a point.
What the Toreadores have done this year that they didn't during those attempts at a title is open the Pacific Division season with two straight wins.
Going into Tuesday's home battle with Monte Vista Christian, Monterey has outscored its first two league opponents 7-1.
Sanchez and Diego have both contributed goals to the fast start while the defense has allowed just two first half goals in seven overall games.
What the Toreadores have to be cautious about today is a letdown with unbeaten North Salinas on the agenda on Thursday. Two ties to the Vikings last winter ultimately cost them the league title.
