Gonzales boys soccer

For all the struggles the Spartans sports programs have had in recent years, the boys soccer team is emerging as a threat in the Mission Trail Athletic League.
 Not that this should come as a surprise after last year's 8-3-1 finish in the MTAL, the first time the Spartans have won six or more games since capturing an MTAL title in 2010.
 Since falling in its MTAL opener to Carmel -- tonight's opponent -- Gonzales is unbeaten in its last five games, holding a half-game lead over the defending champion Padres.
 Edwin Arias has continued to kick in clutch goals for the Spartans while the defense has allowed just two goals during their five-game winning streak.
