I like the fact that more coaches wanted to be a part of it, that more players and schools wanted to take part in it -- that it was important to them.
I like the format in how players are divided up to make it more competitive with less animosity.
The future has never looked more promising for an event that began 32 years ago, has been played in the summer and winter, in the evening and afternoon.
However, I have one more suggestion that I believe would enhance the magnitude of this game.
Move it up about three weeks.
I've check. You can play this game the day after the CIF football season comes to an end. The season officially ended this year on December 17.
Granted, that's close to Christmas. But now you do not need more than a few practices to play the game, as more players are still in a football mood and don't need to shake off the rust.
Make it a Thursday night special. Had that been the case this year, that would have been December. 22. Schools are out. What else are you going to do? Christmas shop?
While most winter sport coaches have allowed their kids to play in the game, it's a lot to ask for a kid to miss a few practices once league play rolls around in basketball.
I realize it's a small amount of players. But there's a big difference between a league game in January and a non-league game in December.
Instead of a dozen league basketball games to go up against -- as was the case on Friday, you'd have the stage to yourself. Make this game the sole attraction.
