Friday's match
No. 2 Notre Dame (21-11) vs. No. 1 Santa Catalina (24-0), 5:30 p.m. at North Salinas
A rematch of last year's Central Coast Section Division V title match, these teams are familiar with each other, as the Spirits have won the last five battles.
"It's time to see if we can fix that,'' Santa Catalina coach Paul Elliott said.
Last winter the Spirits -- who have won five section titles -- defended their section title by sweeping Santa Catalina.
"We've been practicing for Santa Catalina since the pairings came out,'' Notre Dame coach Jason Companion said.
Both teams have yet to be challenged in the postseason, sweeping two opponents in matches that did not last 90 minutes.
The Cougars are the only team in the section that is undefeated this year, becoming the first county team to go undefeated in the regular season.
Santa Catalina has swept 19 of its 24 wins this year. It is 2-0 in matches that have gone to five sets. The Spirits are 1-2. Both teams had five set wins against King City.
McKinley Fox captains the Cougars attack as a three-year starter setter, providing timely sets to the likes of sophomore Maria Santos and junior Saige Madden.
Junior libero Olivia Satow has been a vacuum in the back row for Santa Catalina for the last three years.
Spencer Hagenbuch has compiled over 700 assists this year for Notre Dame, with a bulk of them going to Keona Stopper, Mikeila Banda and Adeline Laughton.
Banda, who began the year as a defensive specialist, is still the teams best defensive player, but has filled in at the net after injuries depleted the front row.
