Live Oak-Palma football

Central Coast Section Open Division III
Friday's game
Live Oak (9-2) vs. Palma (9-2) at Rabobank, 7 p.m.
Once upon a time this was an intense rivalry in the old Monterey Bay League, albeit one-sided over the final six years with Palma going 5-0-1.
The last time these teams faced each other was in 2005, when Palma posted a 55-14 win to share the MBL title with Live Oak and San Benito at 5-1.
No one has been able to figure out how to stop the Chieftains Emilio Martinez, who is closing in on 1,800 rushing yards after a 308 yard, six touchdown rushing effort last week.
The senior tailback, who came into the season with 33 career rushing touchdowns, has rushed for 30 in 10 games this season behind an offensive line that includes Stanford bound Drew Dalman.
The 55 points Palma - owners of nine straight wins - put up last week against Saratoga was a season high.
Don't be mislead by Live Oak's third place finish in the Mt. Hamilton League. Its two losses came from Oak Grove and Leigh.
The Acorns have scored 108 points in their last two games, including a 56-20 thumping of Monte Vista Christian last week.
Palma will face another gunslinger this week in Jonathan Singleton, who has thrown for over 2,200 yards and 20 touchdowns, while rushing for nearly 300 yards and four touchdowns.
Alex Cornejo has 56 catches and six touchdowns for Live Oak while Zach Heffernan has 36 catches and a team high seven touchdown receptions.
Linebacker Stan Smith has been a rock on the Chieftains defense with a team high 75 tackles while Michael Zaragoza and Dalman have a combined 13 sacks.
