Rivalry week

Rivalry week will have extra incentive next week as titles and playoff spots are at stake for as many as eight teams.
 Not everyone will get in.
For all the hype - and deserving - surrounding the 50 plus year meetings between Monterey-Seaside and Pacific Grove-Carmel, neither will be the biggest game.
That distinction belongs to the Palma-San Benito clash, as the winner will win the Gabilan Division title outright.
Just one team has beaten the Chieftains since the Gabilan Division was formed five falls ago and that was San Benito, who is 9-0 this season.
Carmel has already gathered no worse than a share of its eighth Mission Trail Athletic League title in nine years. Pacific Grove has been eliminated from title contention.
Yet, the Breakers are playing for more than just 'The Shoe'. A win likely puts them in the postseason for the fourth straight year. A loss will eliminate them.
The Padres are chasing their third undefeated regular season in eight years. Pacific Grove has beaten Carmel once in the last eight years in the regular season -- at Saturday's site in Carmel.
Seaside has a share of the Pacific Division title. It's 8-1. But nothing has come easy, as evident by its baseball score like 6-5 win over Watsonville Friday.
These teams played arguably the best game of the year last season in which Seaside converted a two-point conversation in overtime for a one-point win over the Toreadores.
Monterey, though, hasn't won a road game in two years.
A game of significance will be Alvarez at North Salinas. The winner will at least have a shot to get into the postseason. The other won't return to the playoffs.
The longest running rivalry game is Gonzales-King City, now approaching 90 years. Both, though, are playing for pride and a mega phone.
