Saturday's game
MPC (6-1) at Redwoods (4-3), 1 p.m.
Redwoods has a little momentum, having won three straight after a 1-3 start. The Lobos fell from the unbeaten ranks last week to conference leader and defending champion West Hills.
MPC is out of rhythm of sorts, playing a non-conference game in Week 8. It is coming off a Friday night road game, and now will play a rare Saturday afternoon affair way up north.
For a program that hasn't shown much of a ground game this fall, Handsome Smith is coming off a 98 yard rushing effort for Redwoods.
While the Lobos will tease you with the ground game, this is a pass first offense behind quarterback Kody Steele, who has thrown for 1,368 yards and 14 touchdowns in five games.
Deryan Sanders has caught a team high 37 passes for MPC while Michael Armstead has 35 catches for a team high 677 yards. Michael Williams has a team high eight touchdowns.
Andrew Jakubowsky continues to lead the team in tackles for the second straight year for the Lobos while Nathanael Heaukulani is second with 42, and a 100 yard interception return.
Alvarez alum Anthony McKay has compiled seven sacks for MPC while Salinas graduate Elijah Kirkland has a team high three picks.
One of Redwoods' losses was a season opening 31-28 loss to Gavilan, a team the Lobos pounded 41-20.
