It turns out Maria Santos isn't transferring.
With the 5-foot-11 sophomore pounding balls across the net, you have to look at Santa Catalina as a threat to not only defend its Mission Trail Athletic League title, but contend for a CCS DV title.
The left-handed swinging Santos was a force last fall as a freshmen for the Cougars, leading the team in kills with 178. She will be one of the hardest hitters from the right side.
Her presence on the outside enables Santa Catalina to keep junior McKinley Fox in a dual role as a setter and hitter, and junior Olivia Satow as a libero.
Filling the middle of their attack at the net will be critical for the Cougars, who opened the season tonight, visiting North Salinas. Saige Madden provides another powerful swing.
In fact, four of the six starters last year for Santa Catalina were either freshmen or sophomores on a unit that won 21 matches and reached the State Northern California DV semifinals.
