Long before there were helmets, face masks, logos and lights, the Mustangs inaugural football game came 94 years ago.
The opponent was Monterey.
Other than the synthetic surface, little has changed on the site of that game nearly a century ago -- accept the result.
King City fell 22-0 at Monterey and didn't win a game in 1922.
That won't be the case this fall after the Mustangs opened a few eyes, erupting for 42 points in a 35-point win.
Did King City find its identity?
King City coach Mac Villanueva wasn't so sure.
If not, we clearly got a glimpse of the potential in a program that has missed the playoffs 10 straight years.
The defense was filthy in big moments, turning two turnovers into 14 points in the first 14 minutes of the game.
And it's only going to get better.
Abel Nava was a beast coming off the right side, creating two fumbles on two sacks in the first half, the second turning into a Jonathon Perez defensive touchdown.
When Texas transfer DeVante Anderson's paper work gets cleared, the Mustangs are going to create headaches with two bookend pass rushers.
What's critical for King City is to build off this win. If you recall, it rallied for an overtime win last year on the road in Week 2, then promptly got pounded in Week 3.
