Alvarez football

Only two current head football coaches have started their careers 2-0.
Make it three now as Brad Mendes and the Eagles are 2-0.
Alvarez has been impressive in outscoring its first two opponents 61-21. Players are buying into the schemes that Mendes has incorporated in a short time.
Of course, it doesn't hurt having a returning speed pass rusher like Alan Llamas, who had four sacks in Friday's win over Alisal. The defense is creating havoc on opponents with seven turnovers.
But these were more like quizzes for Alvarez. Its next two opponents were a combined 22-3 last year in Burlingame and Elk Grove.
The Eagles depth could be tested, particularly after getting dinged up last week in a physical battle with Alisal.
Yet, confidence is growing. It doesn't hurt having a player like Matt Martinez, who has rushed for four touchdowns. An all-state wrestler, success is an expectation for the junior.
For now Mendes is in elite company. By the way, the previous two coaches to start 2-0 both went on that year to win league and section titles in Carmel's Golden Anderson and Palma's Jeff Carnazzo.
