Alvarez-Burlingame football

Friday's game
Alvarez (2-0) at Burlingame (1-1), 7 p.m.
The Panthers lost just two games last year, one to a state Division III finalist, the other to the team that fell to the state DIII finalist in the Central Coast Section championships.
Yet, unlike last year when Burlingame opened the year with seven straight wins, including a 30-0  shutout over Alvarez, it was beaten in Week 2, giving up 43 points to Half Moon Bay.
The Eagles have relied on an opportunist defense that has created seven turnovers in their first two wins, limiting both teams to seven points in the first half.
Burlingame has produced 89 points in its first two games. This is a team similar to Alvarez in that it likes to run the ball behind a big offensive line.
Alec Meredith and Sean Saunders have rushed for a combined 428 yards and five touchdowns for the Panthers. Eight of the teams 10 touchdowns have come on the ground.
Matt Martinez is coming off a three touchdown rushing effort for the Eagles. Quarterback Logan Esparza has been a threat throwing and running the ball.
Neutralizing Burlingame's ground game is critical. Alvarez's defense has created opportunities when teams are forced to put the ball in the air.
