Monterey-Mountain View football

Friday's game
Monterey (0-0) at Mountain View (0-0), 7 p.m.
Despite a 7-3 overall record and a 5-1 mark in the El Camino Division, the Spartans were left out of the postseason picture last fall.
While Mountain View moved up to the De Anza Division this fall, the Toreadores have moved down to the MBL's Pacific Division after a 2-8 mark.
Both quarterbacks from last year are back for the Spartans in Colin Dickerson and Owen Mountford. Monterey could alternate quarterbacks in Evan Charles and Anthony Cortez on Friday.
Defensively, Mountain View gave up just 136 points last year. The Toreadores scored 166 points in 10 games last season, 77 in their two wins.
With an entire off-season to grasp a new system, Monterey is going to mix in the passing game this fall. Yet, to be able to chuck it down field, it still has to grind for balance.
The Toreadores held their own last week in a scrimmage with Bellarmine and San Benito. They have not suffered back-to-back losing seasons in 13 years.
Avoiding a slow start is critical for Monterey, who was outscored 110-40 in the first quarter last fall. Dating back to 2014, Monterey is 1-8 playing away from Monterey High.
