Greenfield-St. Francis Catholic football

Friday's game
Greenfield (0-0) vs. St. Francis Catholic (1-0) at Watsonville High, 7:30 p.m.
Two of the last three meetings between the two teams have been decided by two and one point. The other was tied until the Sharks scored with 23 seconds left in the game.
Since leaving the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League four years ago to save the program, the numbers have improved at St. Francis Catholic, whose program has 51 players listed this fall.
In an effort to jump start the program, the Bruins dumped their old schemes and brought in a brand new offense this fall.
It will be trial by fire in the early stages, as seeing the ball put in the air at Greenfield is as foreign as an afternoon where the wind doesn't blow down in south county.
For now the defense, anchored by three-year starter Sabian Jackson, will need to clamp down on the Sharks ground game, which netted 238 yards last week -- 124 from tailback Richie Martinez.
Derric Estrada-Haro was efficient, completing four-of-seven for 104 yards and a touchdown for the Sharks.
An Achilles heel for Greenfield last season was the first quarter, where it was outscored 76-24 in its eight losses.
