Gonzales-King's Academy football

Friday's game
Gonzales (0-0) at King's Academy (0-0), 7:30 p.m.
Originally slated to be a home game for the Spartans, their season opener was moved to Sunnyvale after King's Academy offered to provide a chartered bus and the gate.
Last fall the Knights were 4-0 at home, reaching the postseason, where they fell 50-47 in the opening round of the CCS divisional playoffs to Carmel.
Needing to win one of its final two games last fall to end an 11-year playoff drought, Gonzales fell at home in both battles, finishing 5-5 for the second straight year.
Back for King's Academy is sophomore quarterback Mike Johnson, who threw for 2,248 yards and 24 touchdowns last year as a freshman.
The 6-foot-3 gunslinger had just three interceptions in 180 attempts, helping the Knights score 511 points in 11 games last season.
One of his targets will be sophomore Kamau Carlisle, whose older brother Amir, is currently a wide receiver on the Arizona Cardinals.
Two quarterbacks were battling for the starter job for Gonzales. One of their primary targets should be Jose Espinosa, who caught 45 passes for nearly 800 yards last year.
While the Knights produced 40 or more points in nine games last year, they also gave up 40 or more points in their final three games.
Gonzales has to neutralize King's Academy's speed, which may look even faster on its brand new synthetic field.
