Earlybird cross country

North County cross country coach and Earlybird Invitational meet director Gus Ibarra exercised every possible option.
In the end, there was no other alternative than to cancel the 22nd annual Earlybird Invitational, which was slated for Sept. 10 at Toro Park.
The county park has become a make shift home for thousands of firefighters fighting the Soberanes fire, which is more than a month old.
There is no timetable for when Toro Park will re-open.
According to Ibarra, the annual meet had its biggest and most competitive lineup, with over 40 teams slated to compete.
Ibarra searched for alternative sites, but was unable to corral any suitable courses that could host so many athletes and teams this close to the date.
The meet has become one of the more popular invitationals in the section, serving as a kickoff for some of the sections top runners.
The meet is slated for next season on Sept. 16, 2017.
