Carmel boys polo

Perhaps being oblivious to pressure makes the unexpected more sensational.

Because teams on a youth movement are not suppose to come back from five goals down in the second half to beat the reigning Gabilan Division boys water polo champions.

"It’s trial by fire for us,’’ Carmel coach Aaron Gaily said. "On the job training. Call it what you want. You can talk about comebacks. But you can’t buy that kind of experience.’’

Until now.

For all the growing pains Gaily expects this fall, an argument can be made that the Padres grew up Tuesday, using a tenacious defense and a highlight reel effort in the second half to beat visiting Santa Cruz 11-10.

"In the end, it’s all instincts,’’ Carmel sniper Kevan Auger said.

Auger, one of the few holdovers on the Padres, provided a game high six goals, including the game winner on a pass from Leo Gonzales-Smith with 22 seconds left.

"Leo and I have been playing together for eight years,’’ Auger said. "We’re very connected. I knew it was coming.’’

Gaily wasn’t so sure.

"To be honest, it was a broken play,’’ Gaily said. "But it got to where it needed to go.’’
