Male Athlete of the Year honorable mention list
Jordan Graves, North County: The Condors all-time scoring leader in basketball, the four-year starter averaged nearly 17 points a game this past season. Graves led the team in assists (68) and steals (62), finishing among the top 10 in the county in earning all-county honors for the third straight year.
Moving Graves to quarterback three games into the season changed North County's fortunes in football as the team went 4-2 with him as the starter. Graves combined for nearly 1,000 rushing and passing yards. He also spent time as a defensive back.
Graves changed sports in the spring, going from a starter in baseball to a golfer, helping the team win the Pacific Division team title.
Jarod Davis, King City: The senior put together an impressive senior resume, earning all-county honors in football after catching 42 passes for nearly 800 and nine touchdowns as a tight end. Davis also led the team in sacks and was among the team leaders in tackles.
The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder gave King City a presence in the paint in basketball, averaging nearly 15 points and 12 rebounds a game, helping propel them to the postseason.
On the track, Davis uncorked the shot a career best 51-5 1/2. He reached the Central Coast Section finals, finishing fifth overall.
Davis' sister Jessica, was The Herald's Female Athlete of the Year in 2014 while his older brother Jake played football at Cal.
Ryan Jensen, Salinas: Bound for Fresno State on a baseball scholarship, Jensen earned all-county honors this past fall in football.
The senior caught 45 passes for nearly 900 and 13 touchdowns for the Cowboys, catching four touchdowns in a playoff loss to Palo Alto. He also had a 43 yard touchdown run on a fake punt and ran back kickoffs.
Jensen was the ace of the Salinas pitching staff this year, striking out 48 in 35 1/3 innings. At the plate, he was among the team leaders in multiple hit games, hitting a home run.
Jensen also served as a key reserve off the bench for the Salinas basketball team, providing quality minutes on defense.
Sam Fensternaker, Pacific Grove: The Mission Trail Athletic League's co-Defensive Player of the Year in basketball, the senior was a defensive demon, leading the team in steals.
Fensternaker also made impact for the co-MTAL champion Breakers football team, leading them in interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. He also ran a fumble back for six points.
A three-sport standout, Fensternaker also played tennis, where he was a part of Pacific Grove's No. 1 double teams.
Joseph Gutierrez, North Salinas: A three-time member of The Herald's All-County baseball team, the senior won five games, striking out 68 in 54 innings.
Gutierrez also hit .398 for the Pacific Division champions, driving in 25 runs and scoring 33. Nearly half of his hits went for extra bases.
A playmaker in football, Gutierrez finished among the Pacific Division champions leaders in rushing yards and receiving yards, producing six touchdowns. He also led the team in interceptions and ran back punts.
