Central Coast Section Division II semifinals
Tuesday's game
No. 13 Monterey (14-14) vs. No. 1 Carmel (21-7) at San Jose Municipal Stadium, 7 p.m.
No one should be surprised Carmel is back in this position.
Monterey is a different story.
The Toreadores limped into the playoffs, having lost their last six Gabilan Division games.
The postseason, however, has provided a fresh start for Monterey, who has gone on the road and knocked off defending champion Sacred Heart Prep and No. 5 seed Hillsdale.
Now comes a former rival and the top seed in the Mission Trail Athletic League champions.
The two teams faced each other in the 2014 quarterfinals with Monterey prevailing 3-2.
The Padres, who fell 4-2 in the CCS DII finals last year, have outscored their first two opponents 17-2 behind the bats of Carter Hayes, Cody Clark and John Stivers.
Pitching and timely hitting has carried the Toreadores in the postseason as Matthew Wright and Nick Stornetta have been clutch in run producing opportunities.
Look for Ryan Moreno to start on the mound for Monterey with Carter Aldrete available for relief. The shortstop has tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in the playoffs.
Elliott Bouc has won his last eight starts for Carmel, allowing just two earned runs while tossing two complete games.
