Gabilan Division track finals

One for the thumb is going to take a courageous effort with a lot of personal records for Palma to make it five straight Gabilan Division track and field team titles.
Not that it can't happen as the Chieftains have proven during their run of four straight league titles, having overcome obstacles in their path in the past.
Yet, if you're going by Tuesday's Gabilan Division trials, which did not include three events, Palma is a 29 point underdog to undefeated San Benito, whose depth is outstanding.
The Chieftains are going to have to surge in the field where Drew Dalman is among the favorites in the shot and discus, as is Jack Fling in the pole vault and high jump.
Palma could pile up as much as 50 points in five field events. Where it needs to make its presence felt is in the sprints, where it could tack on another 30 plus points, or manage just 17.
The Balers are going to score heavily from the 400 up in the running events, although North Salinas could make some noise in the distance events behind Raul Barraza.
San Benito is poised for a third straight girls title behind Marisa Villegas, who will be the favorite in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.
Salinas sophomore Brooke Oleson has put her name among the elite in the Central Coast Section in the 400 after clocking 56.31 in Tuesday's trials. D'Vina Brown has a 27 foot lead in the discus.
