Taking the next step for Carmel means a Central Coast Section Division III title.
Finalists last season, the Mission Trail Athletic League champions and top seeded Padres open the tournament today, hosting No. 16 seed St. Lawrence of Santa Clara.
After 41 years, St. Lawrence will be closing its doors in June, meaning this is the last sporting event for the school.
Carmel, who fell 4-2 to Sacred Heart Prep in last year's DIII title game, have relied on a lineup with no weaknesses in the order.
University of Pacific bound Carter Hayes has put together 15 multi-hit games, driving in 31 runs for Carmel. Lennie Rodriguez and his team leading four homers should be back in the lineup.
Despite dropping its last three MTAL games, King City warranted a No. 10 seed in its return to the postseason after a six year drought, and will visit No. 7 Burlingame.
Four-year starter Jacob Flores has carried a Mustangs lineup that has four sophomores in the batting order and another on the mound.
Pacific Grove has been in playoff mood the last two weeks, needing all four wins to assure itself a spot as the No. 11 seed, visiting No. 6 Sacred heart Cathedral.
Noah Ryan and James Donlon have been consistent at the plate all season for the Breakers, who were 31-0 in 2013.
In danger of missing the postseason, Soledad regrouped in the final week by winning their final two games to get the No. 12 seed and a trip to No. 5 Hillsdale.
Jordan Morrison has at times carried the Aztecs behind the plate and on the mound, while leading the team in multi-hit games.
Despite having one of the top players in the section in shortstop Carter Aldrete, Monterey dropped its last six games in the Gabilan.
Because five teams are awarded a playoff spot out of the Gabilan, the Toreadores were seeded No. 13 and will visit defending Division III champion Sacred Heart Prep.
