A program so rich in tradition and prominence took a nose dive.
For the first time in 32 years, King City missed the postseason in 2014. Last year it got worse as the program won just seven games, its lowest total since its inaugural season in 1979.
All dynasties come to an end?
This one appears to be short-lived.
Not only have the Mustangs equaled last winter's entire win total, but the program is one of two teams still undefeated in the Mission Trail Athletic League at 4-0.
King City coach Frank Padilla told me 'one game at a time'.
It has to be that way for the resurgent Mustangs, who don't possess a dynamic scoring threat or have a player that opponents have to focus on.
Instead, the true meaning of team exists with this core.
Different names step up each night, anchored by Aly Carroll -- one of just two seniors on the roster. The 5-foot-10 post is averaging 11 points a game with six double-doubles this season.
King City, which hosts rival Greenfield on Wednesday, is a youthful team with sophomore Megan Flores and freshman Grace Shepherd making immediate impacts on the hardwood.
Defense has triggered the Mustangs surge as they have allowed an average of 33 points a game in four MTAL games.
Carroll is among the league leaders in block shots. Offensively, Graci Rosas and Hayley Green are giving King City a charge outside the perimeter.
