Hartnell (4-21, 0-11)
It wasn't so much the lack of talent as much as a lack of cohesiveness as a unit that kept the Panthers winless last year in Coast Conference play.
It was enough for head coach Andrew Vasher to clean house. As the veteran coach pointed out, there is a reason only three players are back from last year's team.
The trio that are back have spread the message in non-conference play that being selfish will not be tolerated this season.
Not only did Hartnell open the year with three straight wins to put last year's 12-game losing streak in the rear view mirror, but it was among the state leaders in points midway through December.
What the Panthers lack in size is made up with the ability to create matchup problems, utilizing their quickness and chemistry on the court.
Oh, and this is a good shooting team.
Hartnell knocked down over 50 percent of its 3-point attempts in erupting for 105 points against a good Alameda team. It went into December shooting 48 percent from beyond the arc.
Among those holdovers is San Benito graduate Hyram Miskin, who is averaging 19.8 points a game for Hartnell.
The 6-foot-4 guard has been a nice compliment to freshman Riley Knowles, who is among the state leaders in scoring, averaging over 25 points a game.
Miskin hasn't forgotten last year. He felt the team concept was lacking. It has served as incentive for the sophomore shooting guard.
While this is a freshman dominated team, former Soledad sharpshooter Anthony Jasso is providing quality minutes, averaging 9.5 points in his second season with the Panthers.
A member of Soledad's only league title team in 2007, Jasso was not ready to put the high tops in storage, juggling a full-time job to play basketball and pursue his education.
Coming out of a two-year hibernation to make an immediate impact for Hartnell is former Salinas High guard Jordan Villandea, who is averaging eight points a game coming off the bench.
For those that think you can't win being a jump shooting team, did anyone see the Warriors rise to a NBA title last year?
