Saturday's game
Central Coast Section Division V playoffs.
Kings Academy (8-2) at Carmel (7-3), 1 p.m.
The Knights offense is built around sophomore tailback Maurice Washington III and freshmen quarterback Michael Johnson Jr.
The 6-foot-1 Washington is coming off a 402 yard rushing effort on just 18 carries. He has over 1,700 rushing yards and has scored 30 touchdowns this season.
Johnson, whose dad Mike is the head coach and a one-time 49ers, Chargers, Ravens and Falcons assistant coach, has thrown for 1,863 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Among the eight wins Kings Academy recorded this year was a 35-21 decision over Menlo, a team that beat Carmel 28-21 in Week 1.
The Knights have scored 40 or more points eight times this year, but have also allowed 63 and 50 points in two Peninsula Ocean Division losses.
Incorporating Daniel Higman into the offense behind center in the last two games for Carmel has seen the junior rush for over 100 yards twice, accounting for six touchdowns.
Higman provides a different dimension when he's at quarterback. That in turn has enabled Covossay Windham to get untrack for the Mission Trail Athletic League tri-champions.
The Padres can still wing it with John Stivers and Hayden Stachelek being two big receiving targets. But the ground and pound attack is chewing up the clock and providing the defense with more rest.
Two weeks ago Carmel's defense shutout King City in the second half. Last week, it kept Pacific Grove off the scoreboard in the first half in building a 24-0 lead.
