Wednesday's match
Central Coast Section Division V semifinals
No. 4 Crystal Springs Uplands (24-5) vs. No. 1 Notre Dame (29-5) at Thomas More, San Jose, 7:30 p.m.
Both teams have five overall losses this year. Each swept their first round opponent.
But that's where the similarities end.
The reigning Central Coast Section Division V champion Spirits are just at a different level than the West Bay Skyline League champions.
One of the Gryphons non-league setbacks this fall was to Alisal.
Crystal Springs does have some size in 6-foot freshman Hannah Rennert and 5-9 junior middle Mina Nezam-Mafi, who led the team in kills this year.
Two freshmen and two sophomores help fill out the Gryphons roster.
Notre Dame comes at you from all over the net, led by Nikki DeSerpa's 300 plus kills. Setter Julia Scattini can turn to Kate Lathos, Jennifer Lane and Chase Hagenbuch.
Libero Mikeila Banda has been a rock in the back row for the Spirits while middle Adeline Laughton is closing in on 100 blocks at the net.
