If you didn't see it coming, you weren't alone.
Then again, no one has taken Soledad seriously this year.
Have the Aztecs got your attention now?
Soledad coach Frankie Berlanga asked his players to keep things in perspective after Friday's 9-3 win over Carmel.
Forgive them if emotions are running high.
It's been 15 years since Soledad had beaten the Padres -- when Berlanga was a receiver in purple.
Soledad had never beaten Carmel at home.
And now the Aztecs are two wins away from breaking the single-season school record for wins.
Berlanga told his players 'we have a lot of football left'.
Yes, he's thinking playoffs.
And while it will require help, Soledad could be in position to gather a share of its first ever Mission Trail Athletic League title.
That blue collar defense rose to the occasion again for the Aztecs, holding a team out of the end zone for the fourth time.
But wasn't just any team.
This was Carmel, a program that was averaging nearly 50 points a game in league play.
Soledad sent a message.
A new version of the 'Purple People Eaters' on defense has left its imprint
