The anticipation of these teams playing each other each year is still just as big as it was 18 years ago when Palma moved into the same league as Salinas.
Great atmosphere. Lots of adrenaline. Expectations.
On the field, the song remains the same.
Salinas just can't clear that barrier when it comes to facing Palma.
Well, it did once back in 2003 when most of the current core of players were five years old.
But that's it.
The Chieftains 35-17 win was their 13th straight decision over Salinas.
Dating back to 1998, Palma is 17-1 against the Cowboys.
While I wouldn't say Palma is in Salinas' heads, I do think there is a mental block of 'here we go again'.
Take the fourth quarter for instance.
Palma has a 14-10 lead and drives 80 yards for a touchdown. On the ensuing series, Stan Smith picks off a pass and returns it 57 yards for a touchdown.
In a span of 54 seconds, the Chieftains lead goes from four to 18.
Palma outscored Salinas 21-0 when the game was on the line in the fourth quarter after Jarod Torculas rushed for his third touchdown of the game.
Two fourth quarter Salinas turnovers lead to 14 points. Enough said.
