Friday's game
North Salinas (5-2) at Seaside (5-3), 7:30 p.m.
Could one of these teams be ticketed back to the Gabilan Division next fall in this Pacific Division showdown for first place?
Both have had sudden turnarounds, which include non-league wins over Gabilan Division teams.
North Salinas may be a little more polished offensively behind quarterback Tim Burkhardt. But the Spartans have arguably the most explosive player in tailback Keishawn Robinson.
Burkhardt has thrown or rushed for over 1,000 yards for the resurgent Vikings while the lightening quick Robinson is closing in on 1,000 rushing yards for Seaside. Both are juniors.
Both teams are in the title chase with North County because of tenacious defenses. North Salinas has five defensive touchdowns this year behind Ben Organista.
Seaside has watched sophomore Malik Jeter evolve into one of the more fierce hitters in the Pacific Division, a sideline-to-sideline type of defender with a lot of energy.
Jeter has been a threat in all three phases of the game, having scored two touchdowns on offense and returned a kickoff for six points.
Quietly having a solid season for North Salinas has been Joseph Gutierrez, who has rushed for three touchdowns and caught three touchdown passes.
Seaside has won three straight home games while North Salinas is undefeated on the road this year.
Last year Seaside's only win came against North Salinas.
