Gonzales-Carmel football

Saturday's game
Gonzales (3-0) at Carmel (1-2). 2 p.m.
It sure looked like the same old Carmel offense last weekend in erupting for 55 points. It also looked like the same defense that has allowed a lot of points in big games over the last three years.
Granted, some of that had to do with facing the reigning CCS Open Division champions last week. Some of it had to do with three second half turnovers.
If Gonzales was paying attention, it realizes it has to control the ball with time consuming drives to keep the Padres offense off the field.
The Spartans are off to their best start in 12 years. That's also the last time they defeated the Padres  42-41 in Carmel.
Gonzales, who had a bye last week, has relied on a defense that has allowed one touchdown all fall, anchored by Isaac Madrigal and Ryan Avila.
That defense will be put to a test as the Padres have arguably two of the best offensive weapons in the MTAL in tight end John Stivers and running back Covossay Winhdam.
The 225-pound Windham is coming off a 35-carry, 300 plus yard rushing effort against Sacred Heart Prep while Stivers has 16 catches this year.
Mistakes have been a thorn in Carmel's side this fall. The Padres have also lost four straight home games, dating back to 2014.
