Saturday's game
Soquel (0-1) at Monterey (0-1), 2 p.m.
The 42 points Monterey gave up last week is a little misleading when you consider three turnovers helped Half Moon Bay produce three touchdowns.
Still the offense struggled and the defense spent a lot of time on the field. With a half dozen players seeing action on both sides of the ball, Monterey was spent.
The offense will improve as players get acclimated to a new system. Akili Jones has to have more touches for the Toreadores to be a threat.
The Knights, who were just 4-6 last year, gave up a season high 61 points to Monterey in last year's battle.
Quarterback Eddie Alvarez and tailback Ryan Canavan are both back for Soquel. Alvarez threw for nearly 170 yards and a touchdown in last week's 21-14 loss to Los Altos.
The Toreadores have not started a season 0-2 since 2002. Once upon a time these teams were rivals in the old Monterey Bay League in the mid 1980's.
With temperatures expected to be in the mid 80's on Saturday -- at least 10 degrees warmer on turf -- and a roster of 28 players, remaining hydrated is critical for Monterey.
