Friday's game
Pioneer (0-1) at Salinas (0-1), 7:30 p.m.
Little went right last week for Pioneer in a 54-0 pounding by West Catholic Athletic League power Valley Christian, managing just 91 yards in total offense.
Then again the Mustangs were beaten 55-0 by Valley in last year's season opener, then proceeded to win nine of their next 10 games to reach the CCS Division III semifinals.
It appears Salinas quarterback Matt Castaneda and receiver Ryan Jensen have built some chemistry on the field, hooking four times last week -- twice for touchdowns.
Castaneda threw for 192 yards and added 58 on the ground. I'm not sure Salinas wants the burden of its attack to rest on one player -- particularly on the ground.
The Cowboys have got to shore up their pass defense after giving up 200 plus yards through the air on just seven completions to reigning CCS Division III champion Aptos.
Salinas is celebrating its 85th anniversary of playing at 'The Pit'. Last year it was 5-1 at home -- that one loss coming from Aptos.
