Concerns about getting reacquainted with game speed after a bye week were understandable.
Particularly when Fremont scored on the first play from scrimmage.
Challenge issued.
How would Pacific Grove respond?
How about a school record 57 point first half.
Fremont was 2-0 coming into this mismatch.
And for roughly 13 minutes, this was a game as the Breakers were locked in a track meet, up 21-20.
What transpired, though, is how Pacific Grove won the Mission Trail Athletic League title last year.
Yeah, the offensive numbers are impressive.
Yet, the Breakers defense took over, holding Fremont scoreless until there was a running clock and a 40-point lead, running off 36 unanswered points -- in the second quarter.
OK, so the offense has some playmakers, particularly tailback Uche Ebo
Still, defense is going to dictate the Breakers charge towards another league title. That's where the experience still lies.
