Five years ago the former Carmel High three-sport standout suffered a skull fracture in a collision in a seven-on-seven tournament that put his sports career in jeopardy.
Today Franks is a member of the NFL fraternity, having made the Dolphins final 53-man roster as a undrafted rookie kicker.
The 6-foot-2 Franks was sensational in the preseason, converting all three of his field goal attempts, including one of 51 yards. He hit all of his extra points -- no longer a chip shot in the NFL.
No one ever doubted Franks' leg strength.
Consistency was the issue coming out of tiny Division III Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
For now the engineering career is on hold.
Franks has a job in the NFL.
