Andrew Franks

Does the fact that Andrew Franks got the nod to kick in the Dolphins final exhibition game over the incumbent on Thursday give the undrafted free agent the edge?
Well, how about the fact that the Carmel High graduate didn't miss a field goal or an extra point in the preseason, knocking down a 30-yarder on Thursday in what might have sealed his spot.
You're stretching for negatives if you're concerned about Franks kicking in front of big crowds. If the Dolphins have done their homework, they'll realize little gets to Franks, an engineering major.
Already blessed with a strong leg, Franks has been a mark of consistency in the exhibition season -- the knock on him coming out of Division III Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Last week he nailed a 51-yard field goal with room to spare. Granted, there's a little more pressure in the regular season.
But what does Miami have to lose? Last year's kicker was horrific at times. That' is why you traveled to Troy, New York to watch Franks kick in a workout last spring.
Now it's paying dividends. Even if Franks gets released, he will likely be reclaimed and put on the Dolphins practice squad -- unless someone claims him.
Does Miami want to take that risk?
