For someone who didn't run track last season, the 16-year-old made quite a splash this spring for San Benito in reaching the State track and field championships on Friday in Clovis.
Harrison won the Central Coast Section 400 virtually uncontested in 48.58. In other words, he has more in the tank, which will be needed as he is seeded No. 11.
The 6-foot-4 sprinter will likely need to dip under 48 seconds to reach the finals. Harrison is also competing in the 200, where he has a season best of 21.84.
Harrison's uncle Calvin Harrison still holds the state record in the 400 at 45.25, achieved in 1993. His dad Alvin was a state qualifier in the 200 in 1993.
