The senior hurler was taken in the 34th round by the Baltimore Orioles after putting together a strong season for the Otters baseball program.
Yet, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound Groves wasn't even on scouts' radar until he threw a gem in the CCAA tournament for CSUMB in his only start.
"Scouts told me they didn't even know who I was,'' Groves said. "They were there to see someone else.''
That changed overnight as eight scouts began talking to Groves, who has a 93 mph fastball.
Spending most of the season in the bullpen, Groves posted a 4-2 record with a 1.03 earned run average, striking out 44 hitters in 43 2/3 innings. He walked just seven all season.
