Chase Pacheco and Diego Leon will lead a contingent of Hartnell athletes into this weekend's Junior College State Track and Field Championships at College of San Mateo.
Pacheco is going in the decathlon, a two-day 10-event grind that starts Friday. The Palma graduate won the Northern California title and is ranked No. 2 in the state.
Leon, a Northern California 1,500 and 10,000 meter champion, will also compete in the 5,000. The Anzar High product was a state champion in the fall in cross country.
Three other members of the Panthers Coast Conference title team extended their seasons, including Dustin Samms, who set a new school record in the hammer this year at 174-9.
Frankie Gutierrez advanced in the javelin while Palma product Marcus Washington sailed a season best 22-11 1/2 to qualify in the long jump.
The Panthers women's distance core will fill out three events, including the 5,000, where Malena Grover and Brandi Hobson will compete in.
Hobson, a North Salinas High grad, also advanced in the 10,000. Rachel Shimabukuro and Nancy Rodriguez both qualified in the 3,000 steeplechase with massive personal bests last week.
A pair of North County High alums are in the heptathlon, a two-day, seven-event test of endurance -- in Tori Terai and Taylor Blaha.
