Central Coast Section Division III
Quarterfinals
Saturday at the Salinas Sports Complex, noon.
No. 9 Burlingame (12-12) vs. No. 1 Notre Dame (22-5)
Reputation alone can serve as intimidation as the top seeded Spirits have won the last two Division III titles and have a CCS record 14 under their belt -- 13 in the last 18 years.
A member of the Peninsula Bay Division, Burlingame opened the tournament with a 7-6 road win over Carmel. The PAL is an 'A' caliber league.
Freshman Vanessa Gonzalez has won 20 games this spring for the Gabilan Division co-champion Spirits with five shutouts and 119 strikeouts.
Oregon University bound Marisa Given has 40 hits -- including 13 doubles -- in 22 games for Notre Dame. The senior is hitting .580 with 30 runs batted in.
Sarah Muzik has seen her average climb to .445 while Brittany Plascencia sits at .388. As a team, the Spirits are hitting .360 and are averaging 7.5 runs a game.
Notre Dame is 51-12 all time in the postseason, behind only Carlmont's 63 wins.
