CCS Division III softball playoffs
Wednesday's game, 4 p.m.
No. 9 Burlingame (11-2) vs. No. 8 Carmel (17-9) at Carmel Middle School.
A fiery Padres squad lost four Mission Trail Athletic League games by a total of six runs, including a pair to five-time champion Santa Catalina.
Perfection in league was not that far off.
The playoffs present a new season for Carmel, who has four players with 18 or more runs batted in this year, including sophomore Ashlyn Davis.
Complementing the lineup has been the recent return of Lauren Salvati while Danielle Caoili has made an impact with her bat and arm in the circle.
Burlingame finished in a tie for third in the Peninsula Bay Division. It overcame a six-game losing streak earlier in the season.
Sophomore Haley Crowell is hitting .438 for the Panthers near the top of the order, leading the team in runs scored with 18. Six players are either freshmen or sophomores.
The winner gets a shot at top seed and reigning two-time CCS Division III champion Notre Dame.
