Monterey baseball

Next to Palma football, no other program has put together a longer current postseason run than the Toreadores baseball team.
Yet, if the season ended today, Monterey would likely be home for the postseason for the first time in 25 years.
Fortunately six games remain on the Gabilan Division schedule. But at 5-7, the Toreadores have dug themselves a hole, sitting in sixth place.
Only the top five teams from the Gabilan Division are assured a postseason spot. It's unlikely a sixth team would go without a .500 or better record.
It won't get any easier for Monterey, who hosts co-leading San Benito on Tuesday, a team that beat them 1-0 and 3-1 in March.
Just last week Monterey appeared to be back in the Gabilan Division title chase with four straight wins. What has transpired since is three straight losses.
That being said, the Toreadores are just a half-game out of the fifth spot and two games from moving into third place.
That's not going to happen unless it finds a way to win tight games. Monterey is just 2-6 in games decided by one run this year.
Eight times it has scored a run or less in a game.
Those two one-run wins did come at home.
Monterey is 5-3 overall this year at Sollecito Park (4-8 on the road), and 3-1 when it plays games at home in the afternoon instead of the evening.
Its final three home games are all at 4 p.m.
