The Monterey Peninsula College hurler has quietly put together one of the better seasons in the state in softball this spring.
Cortez, a Monterey High grad, is fifth in the state in wins with 21 after tossing a shutout on Tuesday. She's also 10th in the state in earned run average at 1.75.
While not overpowering, the right-hander has 99 strikeouts in 171 innings of work, compiling 12 shutouts and 19 complete games.
