Stevenson-Notre Dame hoops

CCS Division V semifinals
Wednesday's game
No. 3 Stevenson (11-12) at No. 2 Notre Dame (18-7) at Del Mar High, 5:30 p.m.
These teams have a history in the postseason as Stevenson defeated Notre Dame 56-39 in the 1998 D4 finals to capture the programs first and only Central Coast Section title.
The Spirits gained a measure of redemption in 2000, beating Stevenson 48-43 in the D4 semifinals before falling in the finals.
Ironically, Notre Dame and Stevenson have not played since.
And both teams have dropped a division because of enrollment figures.
Neither one of these programs were in the playoffs last year.
The Pacific Division champion Spirits have more than doubled their win total from 2014 with 18, while Stevenson used a strong finish in the Mission Trail Athletic League to get a playoff spot.
While Notre Dame is 15-0 this year when holding teams under 40 points, the Pirates have been held under 40 points just twice all season.
Freshman Ambreece Gaskins is averaging over 20 points a game this year, with a county high 46 in one game. Stevenson teammate Fauve Koontz has been a double-double machine.
Still Gaskins is the target. Or at least she should be.
While the Spirits don't have one dynamic scoring threat, Marisa Given has buried opponents from the outside, having knocked down more 3-point goals (65) than field goals (37).
Teammate Sarah Muzik has ignited the offense while Sarah Nino has had a big second half in the paint for Notre Dame.
