I'm not sure if it was taken into consideration when Monterey was moved into the Gabilan Division this spring that it would be fielding a starting lineup with seven freshmen.
I'm guessing head coach Phil Santora didn't see this coming either.
The future is clearly promising.
Yet, who says the future isn't here, even if it is trial by fire?
No one is going to project a league title. But with eight non-league wins, Monterey is holding its own with a cast of kids.
The Toreadores have already achieved something Santora hadn't seen in his 17 years of coaching baseball or softball when freshman Lexi Singh tossed a perfect game.
With just one senior on the team in three year starter Ashley Brady, providing a presence on the field is junior Gina Bruno, who came up as a freshman two years ago herself.
Bruno has 17 hits -- seven for extra bases -- and has driven in 17 runs in the teams first 11 games.
If the table setters keep finding ways to get on base, Monterey is going to score some runs this year and make some noise in league.
