When you set a school record in the 100 meters and have the fastest time in the section, you would assume that's Mikayla Revera's best event.
Don't assume.
The blistering times Revera has run in the 100 has not changed the Santa Catalina sprinters future plans. The sophomore is still targeting the 400 as her primary event.
That's not always an easy decision when you compare the glamour of the 100 to the torture of a 400.
Revera torched opponents last weekend when she set a new school record in the 100 meters (12.20), shaving over two-tenths of a second off her best time.
She also won the 400 in a season best 57.01, which is the second fastest time in the section.
Yet, what makes the 400 more appealing long term for the 5-foot-9 sprinter is Revera has so much more room to drop time and develop.
I stress long term because her eyes are on a trip to the state meet.
Remember, she hasn't trained a lot in the off-season, having played basketball in the winter. The legs aren't there yet.
Because the events are so close in a regular scheduled track meet, with the 400 first, Revera likely will not pursue both as the season gets into late spring.
While the speed is clearly is there, the endurance is still coming. And that's what is so enticing about her potential in the 400.
