CCS Division V quarterfinals
Saturday's game
No. 6 KIPP-San Jose Collegiate (8-7) vs. No. 3 Stevenson (10-12) at Del Mar High, 4:30 p.m.
I'm not sure anyone projected the Pirates making the postseason this winter. Then again, things can change in a hurry on the hardwood when you get a player like freshman Ambreece Gaskins.
The high-scoring guard is a difference maker, having scored a career high 46 points earlier this year for Stevenson, who is making its first playoff appearance since 2009.
Gaskins has drawn comparisons to former Stevenson standout Katie Denny, who guided the Pirates to their first ever MTAL and CCS titles in 1998 -- a little smaller, but quicker.
Of course, Gaskins hasn't been the sole reason for the resurgence in Pebble Beach. Fauve Koontz has provided a handful of double-doubles for a team that went 4-1 down the stretch.
KIPP won the Private School South Division with a 7-0 record, but was just 1-6 outside league play this season.
