For five decades, Monterey and Seaside have battled each other each season in football. It's one of the more intense and popular rivalries in prep football.
Next year that changes as the two teams won't play each other, unless it's in the postseason.
The reason?
The equity league moved Seaside out of the Gabilan Division and into the Pacific Division next fall.
Monterey already has its four non-league games set up for next year.
Toreadores head coach Tom Newton did not feel right about opting out of the second year of a two year contract with one of the four non-league teams on their schedule next year.
Newton knows the feeling of having an opponent skip out on a contract. It happened to him two years ago and Monterey had to scramble for an opponent.
Yet, not seeing Seaside and Monterey play is like not having the sun come up.
Moving Seaside down to the Pacific Division was the right move. But there are consequences when you're in an equity league and this is one of them.
The rivalry is expected to resume in 2016.
