When you've been on a run like the Breakers, turning in uniforms on Monday wasn't an expectation.
This is a program that had rattled off eight straight wins and has 21 wins over the last two years.
Yet, extending your season into December is rare.
Few teams duplicate the feat in back-to-back years. Pacific Grove is no exception after falling 21-14 to Monte Vista.
Four turnovers grounded the offense and put a depleted defense on the field. Yet, defense is what kept them in the game -- that and tailback Jason Leach.
Leach couldn't practice all week because of a sore knee. He was limping before the game. Then he goes out and chalks up over 200 yards in rushing and receiving yards.
Just once before has Pacific Grove won 21 games over a two-year stretch, that coming 2006-2007. In time the players will recognize the record tying achievement, as well as a league title.
The ironic twist in this magical run is three of Pacific Grove's four losses came at home.
