State Nor Cal Div. V playoffs
Saturday's match
No. 3 Notre Dame (30-6) at No. 2 University-San Francisco (33-4), 7 p.m.
The first thing that gets your attention about the Red Devils is they are 14-0 at home this year.
University opened the season with 11 straight wins -- all by sweeps.
Its first loss came at the hands of nationally ranked Sacred Heart Cathedral. Ironically that was Notre Dame's last loss on Nov. 1.
The CCS Division V champion Spirits have rattled off eight straight wins -- all by sweeps. In four postseason matches, no opponent has scored more than 15 points off them.
Runner-ups in the North Coast Section to perennial state power and top seed Branson, University is led by 6-foot-1 senior Jaelah Hutchison.
The Red Devils size is very comparable to Notre Dame, who relies on an abundance of hitters at the net, anchored by Gabilan Division co-MVP Emily Cunanan.
Nikki DeSerpa and Jennifer Lane have asserted themselves at the net with Lane being a menace in the middle with her defense in the postseason.
The Spirits have been a team that has gone on runs in the playoffs. In Tuesday's match, libero Julia Scattini served up 10 straight points. Notre Dame had five runs of five or more points.
Defense dictates the tempo at this point, as will limiting mental mistakes. In the Spirits last match, they missed just three serves.
