Monterey-Salinas football

Friday's game
Monterey (6-0) at Salinas (3-3), 7:30 p.m.
Both teams have had dramatic last second wins over San Benito in the last two weeks.
For Salinas, it jump-started its season. For the Toreadores, it was a wake-up call.
The Cowboys are returning home for the first time since Sept. 5 following a five-game road trip that included a state runner-up, a CCS finalist and two league champions from 2012.
How close is Salinas to being 5-1 instead of 3-3? Well it fell in the final 7.2 seconds to Aptos and 9.1 seconds to Sacred Heart Prep.
What both teams are doing more effectively this fall is throwing the ball. Carter Aldrete was flawless in marching Monterey 76 yards in 21 seconds for a game-winning drive last week.
Still, both teams have a run-first, throwback, old school mentally as Bruce Leighton has chalked up nearly 600 yards for the Cowboys.
Monterey will have Skye Keller back this week. Last week Jason Berring was cleared by the CCS to return to the field. Add Akili Jones to the mix and that's a 400 relay team in the backfield.
